Please join us in congratulating the BARDA scientists and technical experts being recognized this week as finalists for this year’s Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals, what we call the “Sammies.” This year, among the SAMMIES finalists are the COVID-19 Medical Countermeasure Development Leadership Team, including Kimberly Armstrong, Gary Disbrow, Robert Johnson, and Rodney Wallace.
The SAMMIES, run by the nonpartisan, nonprofit Partnership for Public Service, are the premier awards program honoring excellence and innovation in federal service.
Long before COVID-19 was declared a public health emergency, these individuals and many others among BARDA’s scientists and technical, regulatory, contracting and administrative professionals stepped into action to rapidly develop diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines to detect, treat and prevent COVID-19. Their tireless efforts to continuously evaluate the scientific landscapes and make crucial investments in promising medical countermeasures resulted in the delivery of safe and effective life-saving products to the nation and the world.
This nomination is an honor for all of us at BARDA. We faced many challenges and overcame them in vaccine development, in bringing COVID19 therapeutics to the public, and ensuring the nation had reliable COVID-19 diagnostic tests. This was a no-fail mission.
Please take a look at all the nominees for the SAMMIES People's Choice Award, and please vote for our team. We also invite you to join us in recognizing everyone at BARDA for their dedication to fortifying the nation’s health security.
